Sarah A. Murphy, MD, FAAFP
Family Medicine & Integrative Medicine
Today, Sarah leads Nature as Medicine and Forest Therapy experiences for students, patients, healthcare professionals, community members, and organizations in Northern California and Alaska.
Guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT), and certified Nature as Medicine Practitioner through the Nature Systems Institute. She attended Harvard University for undergrad, University of Washington for medical school, and the Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency for her residency training and Integrative Medicine fellowship.
Raised in Alaska, she developed a deep connection to the natural world through a childhood spent hiking, camping, fishing, and living alongside the rhythms of the seasons. Throughout her career, Dr. Murphy combined her love of science, education, and whole-person healing in her work as a physician and educator. While she has long appreciated the benefits of time outdoors, her formal Forest Therapy training transformed her own relationship with nature. Experiencing these benefits firsthand inspired her to help others discover nature not simply as a place to visit, but as a powerful way to deepen a sense of wellbeing, build resilience, and connect to something larger than oneself.
Today, Sarah leads Nature as Medicine and Forest Therapy experiences for students, patients, healthcare professionals, community members, and organizations in Northern California and Alaska. Through guided walks, workshops, and presentations, she blends evidence-based research with meaningful experiences that invite participants to slow down, reconnect, and cultivate the restorative benefits of the natural world.
